Apr 30" 1865
Dear Father and Mother

It is Sunday to day and we have been out on inspection and have been mustered for four months pay but I do not think we shall get any for some time I think we start for Greensboro it is about 80 miles from here It will be a hard march for us as it is so warm The army of Tenn and Geo the last of them have just gone by they started yesterday morning There is a report in circulation that Sherman is relieved from this comand but I do not credit it If he has done what they say he has he certainly should be but I cannot believe it There is some excitement about an expidition bound for Utah Teritory with a lot of mules and waggons to carry rations up there some where

Page 2      Images (pages 2 & 3): 150 DPI100 DPI72 DPI

They say that they will pay $60 per and if they do there will a good many of the boys will enlist for six month I believe You kneed not be in the least uneasy about me for I have seen about enough for a short time They would not pay so larg wages if it was not that they had to endure a great many hardships to endure the goverment does not pay such large wages for nothing or they never have so far And there is some talk of of going to Mexico I want to know if they are paying any bounties or still more if they are enlisting men for that purpos I do not hardly credit it Part of the 10 A C is going down on the Coast to garrison Gen Killpatrick [i.e., General H. Judson Kilpatrick] is to report to Maj Gen Scofield [i.e., General John M. Schofield] for further orders I think they will do the scouting for us I hope so for it will make it a great deal easyer for us all we will have to do will be to stand pickett There has been quite a muss kicked up in our Co about a game of ball they have reduce one of the corporals for speaking out his thoughts about it

Page 3      Images (pages 2 & 3): 150 DPI100 DPI72 DPI

But the ball ended in a fight in which one of the recruits struck a Sargeant with a gun and smashed a gun to pieces but the Sargt was to blame for it insted of the other He is a mason and so are the officers and the other will not stand any chance as far as that is concerned It is quite a help to belong to that badge a great many of them play off and get to the rear when if they did not belong to it would have to stay up to their comand [?] is one fellow in our Co that you will probily know him if I tell you his name it is James W Baxter he has been home three times since I was and has not been with the Regt over two month since I left Now what do you think of that kind of soldiering and he has been as well all of the time as I have and I doubt not he has felt better than I have but this is enough of that kind of talk I wish you would write and tell Luther Tillson that I wish he would not go east untill August or Sept and perhaps I will go with him then

What do you think of my going east on a visit this fall if every thing is favorable I will close for this time Good by Write soon

H E Randall
