Camp In The Field
June 16th/64
Dear Father & Mother

I am not very well at present but I guess it is nothing very much The enemy are in front continual skirmishing day and night but we drove about 1 mile There are not very many getting wounded but it looks hard to see them There was a very sharp fight last night for about 2 hours We were 5 days getting from Chattanooga to our Regt the boys are all well Wm. Prove got hit on the foot by a spent ball & S Walters was hit in the side a pretty severe wound I wish this rebellion was put down things look tolerable favorable if we can believe the papers I do not know when I shall have a chance to send this

There is some talk of our corps going back they say that our corps teams or the best of them is being turned over to the 20th if such is the case there is no doubt but what we shall go to the rear I hope so at least for I do not like the idea of standing up to be shot at but if worst comes to worst I can do it but I hope some thing will keep the bullets off from me But they have no respect for men We took a small fort in front of us yesterday

Direct via of Chattanooga To Co. H. 100th Regt. 23rd A.C.
Write soon good by
H.E. Randall
