1863

Feb 7th  thawing very fast. cracks easy. stood guard last night till 2 oclock dont feel well finished letter to Mary. all quiet.

Sunday

 "  8th  Fine morning over head, but very muddy under foot. I am on guard to day, no preaching, all quiet. no mail I started a letter to Mr. Moraler.

 "  9th  rather a [?] day, came of guard at 9 oclock, all quiet, no mail. very muddy, nothing doing. finished a letter and wrote a piece to Grandmother.

 "  10th  frose here last night, cloudy this morning. thawed all day. I wrote a letter to Mary, trying to rain to night: Lt. Barter [i.e., 1st Lieutenant George W. Barter] tried to resign. I am in command of the company. all quiet. no mail. no news

1863

Feb 11th  rather muddy day. got paid for two months pay, paid S. B. Dobbins [i.e., Private Samuel B. Dobbins] for my wash, done nothing, all quiet, got three letters.

 "  12th  fine day, got no mail paid up the suttler. borrowed 28$. redeemed a note of $8.00. got news that Vicksburg is taken. no mail. all quiet. wrote a letter to father and Emma, on business.

 "  13th  cloudy cool morning. one of our batteries gone to Springfield train gone to. I am on guard had a mail, got letter from Mary borrowed $8 of H. Erwin, all well and quiet, staid on guard till 1 1/2 oclock morning. feels like rain. caught a bushwacker yesterday.
